Aims of the Wandi Landcare Group

The Wandi Landcare Group (WLCG) is a not for profit organization with a membership of volunteers. Wandi is an equestrian area made up of large acreage bush and paddock blocks in varying states of degradation. There is a stark contrast of pristine bush land and weed infested properties. We work towards rehabilitating the natural native bush vegetation on our properties and also help the Town of Kwinana restore Magenup Lake by doing regular yearly plantings of native tube stock and other duties when required. We have a large sometimes daunting job ahead of us and require resources to accomplish these tasks.

Grants for Training Courses

The Wandi Landcare Group has been fortunate this year 2008 to obtain funding from International Power Mitsui for an educational grant. We will be using these funds to run training courses to make our members become self sufficient in maintaining their bush properties. This will mean that they will become less reliant on donated native tube stock which may or may not be suitable for the local area. I believe that it is the way of the future and I’ll be looking toward running more educational courses in the coming year if funding permits. To find out more about the training courses go to the “Courses” page

Funding for Equipment

To implement some of our projects, we need machinery and equipment to carry out the jobs. Once the Lake Magenup Fire Management Plan becomes implemented, firebreak slashing will need to be done at least twice a year to be sure to stop the weeds from growing back too densely. The area to cover is large and the Town of Kwinana has limited funds to be directed towards such works so the slashing could be done with in-kind services from our members if we had a tractor with a slasher available. If I was to make a wish list of equipment we would require to better manage our area to would read like this;

  • Tractor with slasher unit, to be used in maintaining the firebreaks and other duties.
  • PTO mulcher, by mulching the green waste produced by members we would put less pollution into the atmosphere and supply mulch which they wouldn’t otherwise have had to place around their rehabilitated areas.
  • More herbicide spraying equipment, as the number of members participating in the Herbicide Course increases, the load on our current stock of spray knapsacks, safety gear and chemicals will be stretched to the limit. Extra gear will need to be sourced

The WLCG will happily accept all donations of the above.

Web site Funding

The Wandi Landcare Group is currently seeking a kind business to fund the hosting and domain registration costs of this web site. It’s is being provisionally hosted but we need our own presence. If you would like to support our group please contact the coordinator via the “Contact Me” page.
